As our long-time friends and supporters know, the United Methodist Children’s Services (UMCS) supportive housing program has been a labor of love since the early days. Through all of the ups and downs, one thing that has remained constant is the mission-driven commitment of our staff, Board of Directors and volunteers to provide safe, quality and affordable housing for people to live their lives with dignity, raise their families and pursue their dreams.
Over the past year we realized that the best way for us to fulfill that mission was to take on the direct management of our 72-unit portfolio. Those of you with experience in property management will know that this is no small undertaking. For much of the past year, with the invaluable support and guidance from our all-volunteer UMCS Housing Task Force, we executed a transition plan that included the hiring of our own property manager and maintenance staff, an expansion of roles for current staff members, setting up new systems and software programs and strengthening relationships with a multitude of community partners, contractors and service providers. All in all, this has been an extraordinary leap of faith and an exciting challenge, one that we are determined to see through to its successful conclusion.
Though we’re not there yet, our goal is to be recognized as the best supportive, permanent housing program for low income families in the city of Milwaukee. A lofty goal for sure, but one that will be within our reach with the continued support and collaboration of people like you who believe in our shared mission.
