UMCS Welcomes William Schmitt

March 5, 2020

The Board of Directors of United Methodist Children’s Services (UMCS) is excited to announce the hiring of William (Bill)Schmitt as its permanent Executive Director, effective February 1st,2020.  Before joining UMCS as the Interim Executive Director this past summer, Bill worked overseas for Catholic Relief Services (CRS) for more than 13 years in various countries, most recently serving as the Country Director for Turkey/Syria (2015-2019) and Afghanistan (2012-2015), where he oversaw a portfolio of both emergency humanitarian programs and longer-term community development initiatives.

A graduate of Marquette University (B.A. – Political Science, International Relations and Spanish) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (MIPA – Master’s in International Public Affairs), Bill is happy to be back in his hometown of Milwaukee and to be in a position to contribute to ongoing efforts to ensure greater access to services, resources and opportunities for advancement for all city residents, particularly those that have been overlooked and marginalized for too long. “Since coming on as the Interim Executive Director this past summer I have come to deeply admire the mission, staff, volunteers and supporters of UMCS”, said Schmitt. “UMCS has had a huge impact on the lives of so many people over the years, and I couldn’t be more excited to lead our talented team as we continue to work in partnership with residents and business owners in the Washington Park neighborhood and other community-based organizations to better serve those in need.  There are of course many challenges that we face, but there are real opportunities as well, and I know that we will have the greatest impact if we can bring people together and work in real partnership.  That is what I am looking forward to most of all.”

Established in 1962, UMCS has a deep commitment to and long-standing presence in Milwaukee’s Washington Park neighborhood, where it has provided a wide range of social service programs and assistance to low-income,marginalized families, including affordable housing, community health promotion, community organizing, emergency food pantry and family resource center, social work and childcare.

Many of you have already had the opportunity to meet Bill, but please reach out to him directly if you have not.  He can be contacted at or at 414-344-1818.
